Beyond the Brand: Meet Brian Agbor, Founder & Creative Director
A personal journey shaped by culture, creativity, music, and an appreciation for the art of dressing well.
The story of The Dapper Men Company did not begin with a lifelong plan to build a luxury clothing brand. For Founder and Creative Director Brian Agbor, the path into custom menswear developed gradually through a collection of experiences that shaped his appreciation for fashion, culture, creativity, and personal style.
Born in Dallas, Texas, and raised in the North Dallas area, Agbor grew up as the son of Nigerian parents who came to the United States in the late 1990s. His childhood was distinctly American while remaining closely connected to his family's Nigerian and Igbo heritage. Those two influences would eventually become an important part of his perspective as a designer: an appreciation for classic and contemporary American style alongside the expressive approach to clothing, celebration, and presentation found throughout Nigerian culture.
Today, that perspective helps guide The Dapper Men Company and its philosophy of creating garments that feel personal, considered, and Designed Around You.
Creativity Before Fashion
Fashion was always an interest for Agbor, although becoming a designer was never the original plan. As a young athlete growing up in Dallas and attending schools within Garland ISD through middle school, he became interested in the relationship between sports and style. He would sketch sneakers, streetwear, athletic clothing, and other pieces influenced by what athletes and young people were wearing at the time.
Those early drawings were less about becoming a fashion designer and more about the enjoyment of creating something new. They also began developing an appreciation for details that would become increasingly important later in life: how proportions affect a garment, how colors work together, and why certain designs simply feel more appealing than others.
His creative interests continued to expand during his high school years. Agbor wrote poetry and developed an appreciation for Broadway productions, adding writing, performance, music, costume, and visual storytelling to the different forms of creativity that interested him. Fashion and art remained a constant, but they existed alongside many other interests rather than as part of a predetermined career path.
In retrospect, those experiences provided an unconventional introduction to creative direction. Poetry demonstrated how carefully selected details can communicate more than excess ever could, while theater illustrated how clothing, music, lighting, movement, and atmosphere can work together to create a complete experience. Those ideas continue to influence how Agbor approaches fashion today, particularly his belief that a garment should contribute to a larger story about the person wearing it.
Dallas Born, Nigerian Rooted
Agbor's cultural background has also had a lasting influence on his understanding of clothing. His parents came to the United States from Nigeria in the late 1990s and traveled before eventually finding their community in Dallas. While establishing a life in America required sacrifice and adaptation, their Igbo heritage remained an important part of family life.
Growing up, Agbor saw firsthand the significance that fashion holds within Nigerian culture. Clothing is often closely connected to celebration, family, respect, and identity. The richness of Nigerian fabrics, the use of prints and patterns, the presence of jewelry, and the attention given to an individual's complete appearance can turn dressing into an important part of the occasion itself.
His parents shared that appreciation for presentation. Agbor remembers them enjoying the process of dressing well whenever they went out, something they continue to enjoy today. Their example helped establish an early understanding that style is not necessarily about attracting attention; it can also be about taking pride in yourself and respecting the moment you are entering.
That influence remains present in Agbor's work, although it is intentionally interpreted rather than reproduced literally. The goal is not for every garment to look traditionally Nigerian. Instead, cultural references can appear through the richness of a fabric, the movement of a drape, an unexpected cut, a particular proportion, or a subtle detail that adds character to an otherwise classic garment.
This approach allows heritage to become part of the creative process without becoming costume. It also reflects the increasingly global nature of modern luxury, where inspiration can come from many places while the finished garment remains sophisticated, wearable, and personal to the individual.
The Relationship Between Music, Art, and Style
Music has remained another constant throughout Agbor's life. Growing up before streaming became the primary way of discovering music, the radio was an important part of his childhood. He remembers recording songs he enjoyed onto cassette tapes, creating his own collections from whatever captured his attention.
That curiosity never became limited to a particular sound. His musical interests today include jazz, Afrobeats and Afro House, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, pop, country, and other genres. Each provides a different atmosphere, and that variety has helped shape his belief that creativity does not have to remain confined within a single category.
There is also a natural connection between music and his cultural upbringing. Within African culture, music is deeply woven into celebration. Weddings, family gatherings, parties, and cultural festivities often bring together sound, movement, fashion, and community. Clothing becomes part of that environment, moving with the person wearing it and contributing to the visual character of the occasion.
As a Creative Director, Agbor finds inspiration in those relationships. A piece of music can influence the mood of a concept just as easily as architecture, photography, artwork, a particular fabric, or an interesting silhouette. Inspiration does not always translate directly into a garment; sometimes it simply establishes a feeling that guides the creative process.
That freedom to draw from different creative disciplines has become increasingly important to the identity of The Dapper Men Company.
An Unconventional Path Into Luxury Fashion
Agbor's professional career did not move directly from an interest in fashion into the clothing industry. His years working across education, sales, and technology became important parts of his personal and professional development before establishing The Dapper Men Company.
Rather than viewing those experiences as unrelated to fashion, he considers them assets to the way he operates the brand today.
His experience in education strengthened his ability to communicate, listen, and recognize that individuals process information differently. That understanding is especially valuable in custom clothing, where clients do not always know the terminology needed to describe what they want. A successful consultation often requires understanding the individual beyond the measurements and helping translate their preferences into a garment that feels natural to them.
Sales provided a similar lesson in listening. A client may initially say that they need a suit or tuxedo, but the garment itself is only part of the conversation. Understanding the occasion, the client's personal style, their comfort level, their physique, and how they want to present themselves can completely change the direction of a design.
Technology added another dimension by encouraging experimentation and an openness to new ways of presenting ideas. Together, these experiences have allowed Agbor to approach fashion without feeling restricted to one traditional method of thinking. He is comfortable exploring how different styles, formats, cultural references, and modern tools can work together, sometimes creating combinations that might not otherwise be immediately considered.
That perspective has become part of his role as Creative Director. The objective is not to be different simply for the sake of being different, but to remain curious enough to recognize when tradition can be respected while still leaving room for something new.
Designing The Dapper Men Company
The Dapper Men Company has become closely associated with custom suits and tuxedos, but Agbor's creative vision for the brand extends beyond formal tailoring. The company designs custom shirts, trousers, suits, tuxedos, and other garments with an emphasis on creating a wardrobe that reflects the individual rather than simply following a standard formula.
For Agbor, design begins with understanding how a person should feel in the finished garment. Quality, fabric, construction, and fit are essential, but those elements should ultimately contribute to confidence and comfort. A beautifully constructed garment has little value if the person wearing it does not feel like themselves.
This is where the company's appreciation for quiet luxury becomes particularly important. Agbor prefers details that feel intentional rather than excessive. A wider lapel, a carefully balanced jacket length, the drape of a trouser, an unexpected waistcoat, distinctive buttons, subtle embroidery, or the texture of a fabric can give a garment personality without allowing the clothing to overpower its wearer.
As the brand develops, Agbor wants those decisions to contribute to an increasingly recognizable Dapper identity.
“My details are meant to be subtle because we appreciate quiet luxury. As the brand grows, I want people to begin recognizing our identity through the designs.”
The ambition is not to depend on obvious logos to establish recognition. Instead, the design itself should gradually become identifiable through proportion, silhouette, fabric, construction, and the subtle details that distinguish one garment from another.
For Agbor, reaching a point where someone can see a garment and recognize that it feels Dapper would represent an important evolution for the company.
Different Cultures, Connected Through Fashion
The relationship between culture and fashion is particularly important to Agbor's vision for the future of The Dapper Men Company. His own story demonstrates how different influences can exist together without one having to replace another. Dallas, Nigerian heritage, athletics, streetwear, art, music, theater, and classic tailoring can all contribute to a single creative perspective.
He wants the brand to maintain that openness as its clientele and creative direction continue to grow.
Fashion has the ability to connect people from different cultural backgrounds through a shared appreciation for style and craftsmanship. A client does not need to share the designer's heritage to appreciate a beautiful drape, an exceptional fabric, a thoughtful silhouette, or an interesting detail. Likewise, clients should not have to sacrifice their own cultural identity in order to participate in luxury fashion.
Agbor sees an opportunity for The Dapper Men Company to exist within that space: respecting the individuality and cultural background of the person while using fashion as a common language.
It is what he describes simply as the culture of fashion.
The idea is not that everyone should dress alike. The beauty of fashion is precisely the opposite. People can arrive with different backgrounds, tastes, traditions, and perspectives while still recognizing and appreciating something that has been thoughtfully designed and beautifully worn.
Designed Around You
That philosophy ultimately leads back to the principle at the center of The Dapper Men Company: Designed Around You.
For Agbor, customization should extend beyond taking measurements. Measurements describe the body, but they do not explain the individual. Understanding personal style, lifestyle, occasion, physique, comfort, and personality allows a designer to create something far more meaningful than a garment that simply fits.
A wedding tuxedo carries a different responsibility from a business suit. A shirt designed to stand on its own requires different consideration from one intended primarily for formalwear. A pair of trousers should complement not only a client's measurements but also the way they naturally move and the silhouette they prefer.
The relationship between designer and client therefore becomes collaborative. Agbor brings his perspective and knowledge of tailoring, while the client brings their identity and story. The final garment should contain something of both.
This approach also explains why Designed Around You has become more than a campaign phrase for the company. It describes the kind of luxury Agbor wants The Dapper Men Company to represent: personal, considered, and created with an understanding of the person who will actually wear it.
Beyond the Brand
There was no single moment in childhood when Brian Agbor decided he would one day become the Creative Director of a luxury clothing company. His relationship with fashion developed through experiences that initially had little reason to lead to the same destination.
There were childhood sketches inspired by sneakers and streetwear, years spent as an athlete, songs recorded from the radio, poetry written during adolescence, Broadway productions that expanded his appreciation for visual storytelling, and a Nigerian-American upbringing in which dressing well was naturally connected to culture and celebration. Later came professional experiences in education, sales, and technology, each adding another perspective that would eventually become useful in building a brand.
Together, those experiences now inform the creative direction of The Dapper Men Company.
As the company evolves, Agbor's goal is not simply to make more suits and tuxedos. It is to continue developing a recognizable design house capable of expressing its perspective through tailoring, shirts, trousers, formalwear, and future collections while remaining grounded in craftsmanship and individuality.
The brand will continue to draw inspiration from culture, art, music, and the changing world of fashion, but the objective remains remarkably simple: to create garments that people appreciate when they see them and feel exceptional when they wear them.
For Agbor, that is where luxury becomes meaningful. It does not require abandoning tradition, nor does it require following every trend. It requires understanding what deserves to remain, recognizing where there is room to create something new, and designing with enough restraint that the individual is never lost behind the clothing.
It is a philosophy shaped by his own journey and one that continues to define the direction of The Dapper Men Company.
